A general strike has brought life to a virtual standstill in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir. Schools, banks and shops are shut and are expected to stay closed till Tuesday.

The strike was called by separatists in protest at rule by the Indian government in New Delhi. On Friday, hundreds of thousands of people in Kashmir, which is predominantly Muslim, took to the streets demanding a referendum on independence from India.
