- Soldiers fire upon Kashmir protesters
Aug 25, 2008: Soldiers opened fire on Muslim protesters in Indian Kashmir after they allegedly defied curfew last night and tried to storm a police camp. One person was killed and another seriously injured.
The protesters had surrounded a Central Reserve Police Force camp in Srinagar, the main city in India's Jammu-Kashmir state, forcing troops to open fire, said a police spokesman.
A witness, however, said the soldiers had fired on a father and his son without any provocation.
Mohammed Ismail said his neighbour, Ghulam Qadir, and his son were just standing near their home when they were shot.
In Baramullah, 35 miles north of Srinagar, thousands more defied a curfew. At least 27 were hurt when police used tear gas and fired rubber bullets when the mob threw stones.
The curfew comes amid a strike in the region's main city and the largest protests against Indian rule in more than a decade.
The crisis began in June when Muslims demonstrated over a decision to transfer land to a Hindu shrine.
The unrest has left at least 34 people dead.
