Omar warns stone-pelters

GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, Feb 23: Sending across strong warning against the stone pelters, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said the government wouldn’t allow “a handful of the misguided youth to take the state hostage.”
Omar also lashed out at the opposition Peoples Democratic Party saying it was an “opportunistic party, which has mastered the art of making mountain out of the mole.” He also hinted at shifting the ministers who had not performed up to the expectations. In an exclusive interview with a local news gathering agency, Omar said the situation was returning to normal fast in the state but some vested interests were using different ploys to derail the improving situation.
“The stone pelting is emerging as a great threat to human life and property. Government will not tolerate the stone pelters and will take strict action against them. We will not allow a handful of youth to make the state hostage,” he warned.
The government, Omar said was responsible for the safety of more than one crore of people living in Jammu and Kashmir. “We will not spare anybody involved in stone pelting.”
Omar said government was watching very keenly the elements encouraging the misguided youth to resort to stone pelting.
“We have asked the police to identify the elements working behind the scene. They will not be spared,” he said.
All the police stations falling in each district have been asked to remain in high alert, Omar said. And in this connection the concerned Station House Officers and other police officials have been asked to keep a close eye on the youth falling in their respective jurisdictions, he said.
“The police has been given the powers to identify the youth involved in any anti-state activity and take strict action against them,” Omar said.
The CM turned stone pelting as a grave concern for the state government saying such acts affected people associated with different professions and business.
Citing the Varmul incident where a 10-day old infant died in a clash between the stone pelters and police, Omar said it was due to the stone pelting that a family lost their son.
He asked people to unite against the stone pelters and other anti-social elements who are posing a threat to the peace and progress.
Responding to question on arrest of separatist leaders, Omar said government would not compromise on the arrest of the people who encourage stone pelting. “However, anybody who will help the government to restore peace will be supported.”
Responding to another question on protest by the PDP over arrest of the youth by the government, Omar said PDP was an opportunistic party. “They only work for their vested interests. During its tenure in the government the party remained silent on the issue which it is talking loud these days,” Omar said.
The party can go to any extent to gain cheap publicity. Taking undue advantage of the situation the party has always been misleading the people,” he said.
Accusing the PDP of double standards, Omar said the party was trying to take the credit of the surrender policy announced by the government when it opposed a bill on the same policy during its tenure in the government.
He said PDP was criticising the ruling collation government for the Padma Shree award being granted to counter-insurgent Muma Kanna by the central government. “They have forgotten that the PDP leadership had close relation with Muma Kanna and had even given a mandate to his daughter in the last Panchayat polls,” Omar said.
About the relations with the union minister for Health, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Omar said they share very cordial relations. “We have no difference with each other,” he said.
He said the state and the centre and the state governments were trying their best to strengthen the dialogue process at internal level with different shades of opinions to solve the Kashmir.
“The centre has already started a dialogue process in Kashmir,” he said.
Welcoming the upcoming foreign secretary level talks between India and Pakistan Omar said the process has given rise to a new hope.
The CM hinted at transferring the ministers who had not performed up to the expectations.
Omar asked government employees to desist from calling strikes as government had already fulfilled all the promises made with them.
He said the surrender policy would act as rehabilitation policy for the surrendered militants.
