GOWHAR BHAT

Srinagar, Feb 15: A local Court on Monday rejected police’s plea to send at least 16 teenagers, arrested from various parts of Srinagar city, to the police remand.
Police today presented teenagers booked under various acts, including “Prevention of Insult to National Honour” and “waging war against the State,” before the Court of Passenger Tax Judge, Masarat Jabeen, and sought their police remand. However, Court turned down the police’s plea and sent the arrested youth to judicial remand for 8-days.
Police informed the Court that the accused teenagers were “involved in stone pelting on police and paramilitary CRPF troopers, and were stone-pelters.”
“Teenagers aged between 13 and 18 have been booked under 121 RPC (waging war against the state) and the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act,” police said.
The teenagers, who were handcuffed, were crying when presented in the court. They informed the Court that the policemen from police station Nowhatta had picked them up from different localities and they were not involved in the stone pelting.
“I was on a scooter along with my friends when police stopped and arrested us,” a teenager pleaded. The counsel for the accused youth, Rafique Joo, argued that before booking the youth under section 121-RPC, police should have verified about their activities and antecedents. “Then it (police) should have presented a detailed report to the District Magistrate. The DM had to approach the Court to get an FIR registered. Had Court approved DM’s request then only police could have arrested and booked the accused under Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act,” advocate Joo, added.
Arrest of these youth had triggered protests in Nowhatta and Gojwara areas of the old city. Locals have been demanding that the teenagers be released and the paramilitary bunkers removed.
