Army kills youth

Umer Maqbool Dar

He Intruded Into Our Camp: Defence Spokesman Police Registers FIR, Magisterial Probe Ordered

Ganapora, ( Langate) Oct 24: Army troopers gunning down a youth in this north Kashmir village triggered massive protests on Saturday. Locals alleged the victim, Sajad Ahmed Ganie son of Ghulam Mohiuddin Ganie of Ganapora Langate, was fired upon without any provocation, while army claimed that he was shot dead when he tried to intrude into an Army camp at Watergam. Police have registered a murder case against army and started investigations. Family members of the deceased youth told Greater Kashmir that he had left his home in the morning for his daily chore. “ We were shocked to know that he has been killed,” father of the deceased, Ghulam Mohuddin Ganie said. Ganie said that his son had quit his studies to support the family. “ He was our only breadwinner. We had pinned all hopes on him,” he added. As the word about Ganie’s death spread in the area, hundreds of people raising anti- army and pro- freedom slogans took to the streets and staged massive protests. They were demanding stern action against the erring troopers and a judicial probe into the killing. Following protests, police registered a murder case against the troopers of 32 Rashtriya Rifles. However, locals refused to bury the victim. “ We won’t lay him to rest till the judicial probe is ordered,” protesters, who were also joined by the MLA Langate, Er Rasheed, shouted. Later the additional deputy commissioner reached the spot and told the protesters that the magisterial probe had been ordered. When contacted the deputy commissioner Kupwara, Showkat Mir said that ADC, Itrat Hussain, had been appointed as the inquiry officer.

Army version

“ Troopers killed one alleged intruder in its camp at Watergam, Rafiabad. One soldier was also injured in the fracas, when the man attacked him with an axe. The deceased person was reportedly mentally retarded,” army’s Srinagar based spokesman, Lt Col J S Brar said in a statement. “ Today morning, some suspicious movement by an individual was observed near the Watergam camp. On being challenged by the sentry, he charged at him with an axe and hit him on his head and right shoulder, thereby injuring him seriously. He then jumped inside the camp gate and tried to charge at the other sentries in the camp. In the retaliatory gunfire, he was shot dead inside the camp. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident and FIR has been lodged,” the spokesman added. Army

Lying, allege locals

Terming the Army’s claim as a “ blatant lie,” villagers said that if he had attacked them with an axe, they should have shot him in leg or arm. “ They shot to kill him. How could a small axe kill an armed soldier,” said numberdar Ghulam Rasool Ganie, adding that killers should be taken to task. “ We don’t know where they killed him. Their claim that he had attacked them with axe and tried to enter Watergam camp seems concocted,” the numberdar added.
