- After AFSPA, Govt Firm On Disturbed Areas Act
Srinagar, Aug 26, KONS: Whether out of compulsion or conviction, the NC-led state government is in no position to ease the pressure of draconian laws on the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir. It made as much clear in the assembly today when it said that the government had no proposal to withdraw the SRO about Disturbed Areas Act in force in certain districts. The state home ministry said this in response to a question by senior PDP leader, Nizamuddin Bhat, whether the government intended to withdraw the specific SRO. “No such proposal is under the consideration of the government at the moment,” the minister for home said in a written reply. He, however, said that the internal security situation in the state was under continuous review of the government. “Action in the matter will be considered as and when the situation warrants,” he added. Pertinently, recently the state government also refused to annul the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) saying that it would remain in vogue “as long as it was needed.” “We don’t want that people should suffer (but) the act would remain as long as it is needed,” Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister, Ali Muhammad Sagar had told the Legislative Assembly in reply to Muzaffar Hussein Beig’s query, questioning the legality of the act in the state. Beig had held that the state administration was violating the guidelines of the Supreme Court that the Act should be reviewed after every six months.
